A Day in Kalk Bay

In 2018 Forbes Magazine placed Kalk Bay at the top of the ‘Coolest Community in the World’ list and we are definitely not surprised.

Locals and Tourists flock here for the raw beauty, interesting shops, vast selection of restaurants and stunning views. You could easily spend a full day in this little neighbourhood and still not be able to experience it all!

Here are out top picks for what to do in Kalk Bay.

EXPLORE BOMBSLANG CAVES

This is for adventurous groups and if you take the challenge it also means you may have to make this a two day affair. Kalk Bay really is a place to hang out. Exploring this little haven is best done with time on your hands. Feel free to chat to locals and get their take, you wouldn’t want to miss its magical charm.

Make sure everyone in your group remembers to bring a headlamp, good shoes and water. Use Google Maps on your phone. (It both kind of sucks and is really handy that the cave entrance and exit are shown on Google Maps.) Only a short part of the cave has a narrow tunnel, you can stand in the rest and it is seriously good fun.
Where: Park on Boyes Drive above Kalk Bay, then hike up the demarcated route into Echo Valley. The other end of the cave overlooks Fish Hoek.
When: It’s best to hike the route in daylight. In winter, sections of the cave occasionally fill with about 30 cm of water.
Cost: Absolutely free
Tip: Take along two good torches per hiker, water and some snacks

SHOP TILL YOU DROP

Shopping in Kalk Bay will leave you inspired. An eclectic array of art galleries, exotic clothing, vintage books, collectors items, furnishing and souvenirs and that is just for starters. If you really want to experience all that Kalk Bay offers and are shopping for unique and interesting items, we suggest you make a day of it, or two. There are more doorways and secret hidey-holes that will leave the imagination flexing its muscles.

ENJOY REGULAR REFRESHMENTS

Be it local wines, craft beer or personally roasted coffee beans, leave plenty of time for refreshments stops throughout the day, shopping can be a thirsty business.

DINING OUT KALK BAY STYLE

Theatre transfers into restaurants and whether pausing for a refreshment or planning a full three course feast there are choices to be made. Cape to Cuba is a winner for cocktails, Brass Bell for the views and labrynth of seating options with stunning views.
Salt along main road has a casual but vibey twist perfect for catch ups with mates and at the Harbour there is Harbour House for fine dining and Kalkys with a down to earth locals spot with a touch of history. Take cash and prepare to slum it on painted benches. Great spot right in the heart of the harbour.
